Jesus is the light that shows us what God the Spirit really looks like.

“Deliver me from my enemies, O LORD! I have fled to you for refuge. Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground! (Psalm 143:9-10)”

“For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (2 Corinthians 4:6)”

Everyone ‘knows’ that if you switch the lights on spirits disappear. In movies and books and comics, ghosts always like it dark. Why? Maybe its because they’re more scary in the dark? But if they are really so scary, wouldn’t they want us to see them more clearly in the light so we get even more scared?

When the lights go on, all the ghosts, monsters, ghoulies and spirits disappear and we can see clearly. When the lights go on, it turns out that the Slenderman with hollow eyes was in fact my jacket hanging on the chair!

Jesus taught that God is Spirit. God is also light and in Him there is no darkness at all. But until the ‘light’ goes on, we will never see how amazing God really is. Look closely at the verses above from Psalms…

These verses were cherished, guarded and protected by the Jewish people for centuries. They believed rightly that God was a ‘Spirit’ and this is why, unlike every other nation around them, they refused to make any image of God. But that doesn’t mean that they saw Him clearly. They were still in the dark.

It was only until Jesus comes that the full light of God’s revelation shines clearly. Unlike ‘spirits’ in popular culture, God the Spirit does not disappear but instead becomes even clearer now that Jesus, the True Light, shines. Look at the verses again…

Now that Jesus has come we can re-read these verses in the light of Jesus. There is only One God, but look at how He is described in three ways: Lord, God and Spirit! The LORD is the One who delivers us from our enemies. Jesus Christ, the Son, came into our world to deliver us from our enemies: sin, Satan and death. We run to Jesus for refuge and there is no other Name by which we can be delivered.

God the Father is the One Whose will governs everything. His people only want to do the Father’s will. And it is the Spirit that leads us in every day life.

We wouldn’t have seen all this without Jesus delivering us from dark ignorance nor until the Spirit switches the light on in our minds to see the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

God as Trinity is not a Christian invention. Just like when the light is switched on and you see that the Slenderman was in fact a jacket on a chair, so when the lights are switched on, we see what was always there.
