Where Is The ‘Missing’ Holy Spirit?
Jesus invites us to come to Him and get rest because He is God on earth. The words are the Spirit speaking.
“At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me… and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:25-28)”
A long time ago in a galaxy far away… Han Solo, Chewbacca and Princess Leia escaped an asteroid belt by landing on a mysterious dark planet. It was damp, quiet, with swirls of thick mist. They heard a deep rumbling groaning. They got out of their space ship with a foreboding fear. There was a huge monster somewhere near, but where?
Blasters at the ready, they crept around peering into the mist. Suddenly the whole ground trembled and moved, the space ship lurched violently and they had to run and do an emergency take off. As they flew up through the thick clouds the astonishing reality dawned on them. In the dark they had landed inside a gigantic monster who was now closing its teeth-lined jaws. Just in time, with John William’s soundtrack reaching fever pitch, they shot out through its mouth and into space. Shew! All along they were looking for something huge that was right there in front of them and they didn’t even know it.
Jesus walked through the cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum and denounced them because they didn’t see who Jesus really is. In the face of this rejection, Jesus the Son, talks to God the Father and in His prayer we get to see how infinite He is.

Jesus says the Father and the Son know each other. This ‘knowing’ is direct and unmediated because ‘no one knows’ either of them. Jesus says the Father is “Lord of heaven and earth” but He also says, “All things have been handed over to me.” The Father and Son both rule over everything. The Son says that the Father is sovereign in salvation and hides things from proud people and reveals Himself to humble people. But Jesus also says, “… and to whoever the Son chooses to reveal Him.” Both share sovereign choice in saving people.
The Father and Son share the same will. Jesus says to the Father, “… such was your gracious will”, and about Himself He says “…whoever the Son chooses…” To see the One is to see the Other because they both reveal each other. So, two Persons share the same mind, the same sovereign rulership, the same will, and reveal each other equally… the only way this makes sense is if they are One Being and two Persons.
But, God is One Being in three Persons! Where is the missing Holy Spirit? Like the gigantic being that was all around our intergalactic heroes that they couldn’t see, the Spirit is right there! The words that Jesus speaks, the words of the Bible, the words of these verses, are all the Spirit’s words! The Spirit bears witness to the Father and the Son.
What on earth is God doing on earth? Jesus is God who has come to give us the rest that He promised in the Old Testament. The rest that our weary souls can’t find anywhere else.
God says ‘Come’. The Spirit and the Son say ‘Come’. Will you?
