Playing Catch-up With God

Christians don’t know what God wants us to do. We do good deeds trusting He has prepared them in advance for us to do.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10)”

If you think life is difficult, think of poor old Prometheus. This Greek god spent 8000 years in chains having an eagle pick out his liver every day, only for it to grow back again that night, and then be picked out again the following day. Sometimes it really sucks to be immortal!

Prometheus had the superpower of forethought/foresight. He could see in the future what Zeus the chief god was going to do and so Zeus punished him because Prometheus tried to stop Zeus flooding humanity.

Sometimes we want the superpower of foresight in order to foresee what the True God is going to do – perhaps not to try and ‘trick’ God as Prometheus did to Zeus, but maybe out of fear in case we get it wrong. But a relationship with the True God is so much better than Ancient Greek mythology or the MU (Marvel Universe).

Firstly, we did not invent God like the Ancient Greeks invented their gods – these ‘gods’ are so obviously made in the image of man. They are so very ‘humanlike’. The truth is we are God’s handiwork, He invented us. God didn’t just create us, He has recreated some of us in Christ Jesus.

We did not invent God for some purpose of ours, rather He recreated us for His purpose: to do good works. Good works that He decided long ago we should do. So, what are the ‘good works’? There you go again, trying to be like Prometheus!

We don’t know. We’re not meant to know. We are meant to go out there and just do good deeds. As the Holy Spirit says, ‘… whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.’ We don’t get to foresee, instead we play catch-up to God. He is always ahead of us. He decides, He plans, He executes, and we follow behind.

Prometheus had a brother, Epimetheus. His superpower was afterthought/looking back. This is the only certain way to see God’s plan. This is good news because instead of trying to read tea leaves, or wait for a sign, all you have to do is look back.

At the end of today, as you flop into your bed, think of all the good deeds you have done as a new creation in Jesus Christ – things you have done not for yourself but for God’s glory – look back and you will see exactly what it was that God prepared in advance for you to do. Its liberating because it means that tomorrow you can head into your day clueless about what God has prepared for you to do, but eager to do good deeds whatever they may be. You can be confident that as you look back, whatever good deeds you did, that was what God planned for you to do. He walks ahead preparing your way and your works.

You don’t have to be afraid, (your liver is safe), God doesn’t expect you to know but to trust and do.
